Drift towards Evening

Evening was gathering at Hanapepe Pier. The sky had begun its slow turn from gold to rose, and the whole beach lay open before me, from the wet sand at my feet to the far reach of the horizon.
We had been crossing the island since morning, immersed in a full day of photography. The scene asked for nothing. It simply opened, wide and unhurried, and invited me to stand in it.
The foreground lay in shadow, the sand already giving up the day's light. The tide was receding, and each wave carried a little more of the day away with it. The pier reached out across the water, a line I found myself walking in my mind, out toward the softening colour.
Nothing here hurried. Colour spread the full width of the sky, with room for everything to slow. There was no single point to watch; the evening was everywhere at once, and that was its gift. It felt less like watching the day end than like drifting into it.
Years on, the image still works on me the way that evening did. This wide frame opens from the darkened sand, along the reach of the pier, into the breadth of the sky. The eye is not drawn so much as released, left to drift towards evening.
